De Stijl was a Dutch art movement that explored how simple lines, shapes and colours could create striking art. Piet Mondrian became its best-known artist, using strong black lines, open white spaces and carefully placed blocks of colour. His work may look simple, but every line, shape and space was carefully considered to create balance.
Mondrian believed strongly in this approach. He even disagreed with fellow De Stijl artist Theo van Doesburg when he began using diagonal lines.
The influence of De Stijl can still be seen in art and design today. Skismic designs also have strong geometry and bold colour, taking inspiration from modern art while creating its own original designs. It shows how simple shapes and colour can create something full of character.
